    Cotton Info

   Cotton is a soft, staple fiber that grows around the seeds of the cotton plant (Gossypium sp.), a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world. The fiber most often is spun into yarn or thread and used to make a soft, breathable textile, which is the most widely used natural-fiber cloth in clothing today. Cotton, also known as the white gold, is being harvested in many regions of earth but mostly in the Northern semisphere.

  For many people, cotton is considered as a miracle of nature. It is a harvested plant that gives:
  • fiber
  • forage (cotton seed cake)
  • food for humans (cotton-oil).

   Cotton is also important for the greek economy:
  • It is harvested in areas excedding 4.000.000.000 sq.m., which stands for 10% of the total harvested areas and 30% of the irrigated areas in Greece.
  • It provides occupation and a satisfactory income for 100.000 agricultural families that are occupied in the overall parts of production and processing of cotton.
  • It supplies Greek cotton-industry with raw materials.
